Today, we start a 5-part series entitled “Top 5 Mistakes for Businesses in the Digital Age”. In this series, we tackle the top 5 most common mistakes made by businesses while establishing their social media and web presence. So here we go!!

1. Choosing a Business Name Without Securing Their Web Domain Name

In today’s business world, with the increased importance of your online presence, it is extremely important that everything you do as a business flows together. Having a well thought out plan for your all of your media needs is one of the most important things you can do. Imagine a business that has one vision for their business cards, one for their website and one for their social media presence. If a potential customer partakes in any of these mediums, confusion may set in and your potential customer may look elsewhere.

Along those lines, it is important that when you are brainstorming business names, you not only check for business name availability with your business registrar but that you also ensure your desired website domain name is available and secured prior to registering your business officially. This ensures that as people become familiar with your business name and your product/service offerings, they have a website address that makes sense and aligns with your business name.

If you register your business name without securing a related domain name, you may find it difficult to properly funnel visitors to your website and you may also find that your site name is difficult for potential customers to remember. Throw in the fact that registering your business can be an expensive endeavor, depending on what type of business you are establishing, business name/domain name matching continues to be a very important step in your planning process.
